Brainstorming Session

There are many great reasons why you might want to hold a brainstorming session.  One of the best reasons is that you’ll have a  group that will give you creative ideas to take your organization to the next level, or to solve a current problem you’re having.

Many people are intimidated by this process, but really shouldn’t be.
If you’re feeling anxious about taking part in a brainstorming session or starting one it can help you to understand the process behind them.

A brainstorming session includes gathering people together in order to do some lateral thinking and problem solving.  If your company is experiencing the same problems over and over again, it can help to think outside the box a bit.

The kind of thinking and mind mapping that occurs during a brainstorming session can lead to the facilitation of your business goals.  The members of the session will think of ideas you’ve never even dreamed of!  That is why it is best to make sure that the group is very diverse.  You never know what great innovation will pop up.

Another thing to realize is that you’re under no pressure to actually come up with a solution during a brainstorming session.  Just knowing that tiny little fact can help to get your mind really working.  It is amazing what can happen when all forms of stress are eliminated!  If you focus on simply finding solutions rather than settling on one, you’re likely to be better off over all.

Keep in mind that no idea is too silly to mention.  If you’re scared of the brainstorming session, there is truly no reason to be.  The facilitator should make it clear that every idea will be written down.  Most of the ideas will be ones that are “from the top of your head.”  It is ok if they are not fully fleshed out yet because they are not meant to be.

Your company or organization can pick the best idea at the end of the brainstorming session.  It is critical to wait until it is over so that you don’t squash any great ideas.  However, keeping to a time limit is a great thing because the only way to truly solve problems or to move forward is to take action.

Having a brainstorming session can be a lot of fun.  There is no reason to feel nervous or worry that you won’t have anything to contribute.  Once you understand the process you can see that it is a great, non-threatening way to solve problems and be more innovative.  Once you experience great business innovation you’ll want to do it more and more!
