Advantages of Brainstorming

We are living in a very competitive world and to survive we need innovative and creative thinking.  We have depended creative thinkers for inventions, technology, advertising, and just surviving.  As we have evolved, so has the ability to think creatively, and this is evident in the way we live.  Where did the ideas, the inventions, the incredible discoveries stem from?  They are all products of lateral thinking.  They are the process of pushing away the logic and bringing out the illogical, training our mind to create ideas that we normally would think absurd. We hear a lot of about lateral thinking, but what is it and what are some examples of lateral thinking?

The word lateral thinking was invented by Edward DeBono in 1967. It has since become a part of the English language.

Some good examples of lateral thinking are thinking puzzles. These are puzzles that demand you to think out of your typical logic, step outside the box so to speak. Take a look at a situation from a different perspective.

DeBono uses the chess game as examples of lateral thinking. As you look at the chess board, you see the pieces and use your logical thinking about your next move, but it takes lateral thinking to see where the pieces should go, where the game will turn, you have to be able to look at future moves.

Try out these two puzzles, see if you can come up with an answer just using your logical thinking, or do you need to reach out and use your lateral thinking?

Writing brainstorming is a great thing to do before each thing you write.  It is very common these days to see writing that is jumbled without any logical flow.  If you’ve fallen into the trap of just writing as you go, it’s time to take a step back.

Are you familiar with lateral thinking?  Well if you are, then you are familiar with the principle of brainstorming.  This is a method used to think outside of the box…looking at things from a different perspective.

This type of thinking has been around since the 1940s but was brought to us as lateral thinking by Dr. Edward De Bono in a book called “The Use of Lateral Thinking”.  He had a very complex definition, but he basically stated that the goal was to think creatively and totally breaks free of any conventional thinking patterns.  Read the rest of this entry »

There is a great way to generate some radical and highly creative ideas.  This is done through brainstorming.  When you are having a brainstorming session there needs to be an atmosphere of ease and freedom to say whatever you want.  When you have an idea, say it without thinking.  There cannot be anything to hold anyone back from expressing thoughts or ideas, even if they are a bit wacky or weird.
